Project Summary
Santos, an Australian energy company listed on the ASX, has been actively working to reduce its environmental impact through its Climate Transition Action Plan. To decarbonise power generation at remote sites, Santos needed a reliable, renewable power source. The remote location of their Central Queensland site, a brownfield natural gas facility, posed challenges due to its inaccessibility and reliance on high-maintenance generators. This led Santos to seek a more sustainable solution that would align with their commitment to environmental best practices.
The Challenge
The site, which was completely off-grid, supported a network of dewatering pumps via a high voltage system and required uninterrupted operation 24/7. Synertec had a deep understanding of Santos’ site and recognised the challenges of working at such a remote location, which made access difficult and increased maintenance and fuelling costs. Unlike traditional solar battery energy storage systems (BESS), which can be affected by extreme weather events, the robust solution needed to maintain reliable performance under harsh conditions. Synertec managed the entire project lifecycle, including transportation, integration, testing, and ongoing maintenance, ensuring a smooth transition to the new technology.

Powerhouse provided a tailored solution that met Santos’ needs with 99.9% power availability, seamless integration into existing infrastructure, minimal maintenance, and the elimination of fossil fuel emissions. Synertec’s engineering team utilised Powerhouse’s predictive intelligence to deliver clean, reliable energy while minimising disruptions to the operating environment.
The successful installation of Powerhouse at Santos’ site in Roma, Queensland has led to a reduction in fuel gas consumption and cut emissions by 800 tonnes of CO2e annually. The trial has demonstrated effective remote renewable power generation with zero emissions for eight exploration wells and facilitated energy modelling for future systems.Â
This achievement greatly advanced Santos’ emission reduction goals, showcasing precise predictions, reliable energy, and adherence to stringent safety and environmental standards.The successful Roma trial highlighted Powerhouse’s effectiveness by eliminating emissions for eight wells and significantly reducing site visits from 23 to just 1.
